On the evening of November 24th, 2016, the 3rd Seminar of 2016 SHUFE International Law Salon, hosted by the Party branch secretary of SHUFE Law School, Professor Zhou Jiepu, was successfully held in Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (“SHUFE”) Guoding Road Campus. We were deeply honored to have Professor Shen Wei as the keynote speaker of this seminar. The topic of his lecture was “Law and Practice regarding Bilateral Investment in China: From Domestic and International Perspectives”. Professor Shen Wei, who received his doctoral degree at London School of Economics and Political Science, now serve as the Dean of Law School of Shandong University, the Professor of Global Law at New York University, Distinguished Professor of Shanghai Institutions of Higher Learning (“the Orient Scholar”) and a member of the Financial Market Law Committee under G20.

After a brief opening speech given by Professor Zhou Jiepu, Professor Shen started his lecture with International Investment Law. Through the integration of domestic law and international law, Professor Shen illustrated the Chinese law and practice of bilateral investment in a simple and explicit way. He also applied various methods, including data and graphs, to summarize the multilateral developing trend of bilateral investment in China and draw out the reason for the asymmetry between acting as a contracting party of bilateral investment treaties and a respondent in international arbitration for China. Professor Shen further presented a comparative case analysis on BIT and EPA execution in countries and regions worldwide and concluded the lecture by a prospect on the development of Chinese bilateral investment law.

Professor Shen fully answered the questions raised by the students present with great patience after his speech. Later the faculty members from SHUFE Law School and Professor Shen had an academic discussion on the major issues in this lecture. The seminar came to an end with the warmest applause.
