From July 18th to Aug 9th 2016, Zhanjiang Wang, Ke Zhang, Jiaqi Yang, Sheng Meng from School of Law joined 2016 Summer School Program with UC Davis and UC Berkeley. The students from our school, together with students from China University of Political science and Law, have granted useful knowledge from three weeks of intense learning and field visits.

The summer courses are divided into courses from UC Davis and from UC Berkeley. There are 12 courses in total(about 40 periods), including the US federal and its law system, the system of US court and Case Law, US Constitution and Civil Rights Act, Criminal Law, Contract Law, Conflict Law, Criminal Procedure, Environment and Land Law, Jury’s Trial and Psychology, Moral Codes of Law, Legal Writing, Legal Clinics and so on. The lecturing professors are Alan E. Brownstein, Gabriel Chin, Katherine Florey, John P. Hunt, Elizabeth Joh, Shama Mesiwala, Darien Shanske, Donna Shanske, Clay Tanaka, Carter C.White, Michelle Wilde Anderson, Debra Lyn Bassett. The lecturers give light and lively classes, lay emphasis on in-class communication and inspire thinking. When Professor Clay Tanaka explains American Criminal Procedure, he brings toy guns, cliffs, judge’s robe, dollars to illustrate, carefully analyzing the cases, and even brings homemade puffs. Professor Elizabeth Joh, Katherine Florey slow their pace of speaking to make it easier for foreign students to understand; they also hand out the PPTs to every student. The university also arranges site visits. In California City Hall, the government law counselor Lady Diane Boyer-Vine explains California’s law making procedures. In Monroe Center Prison, the guards shows the students around and explains the criminal supervision measures . In California High Court, Judge Hon.David De Alba explains the constitution of jury and relevant judging procedures; the students also audit many cases. During the classes, the students from Law School actively raise their questions. The good attitude and high language level is complimented by the American lecturers. The students from our school successfully passed the close-book exams with high scores.

The students arrive in San Francisco International Airport on 18th July of local time. The teacher from UC Davis leads them to the bus heading towards school, and arrived in the dormitory late at night. The rooms are double-rooms, and there is a nice swimming-pool in the middle of the dormitory. The next day, the school arranges volunteers to show them around, getting to know the school’s history and facilities. The volunteers are very passionate and leave the students with a deep impression. The university provides them with hangtag, dining card, washing card, fitness card and so on, and give detailed guidebook about map of campus, car hiring, insurance and medicine. The students move to Clark Kerr Campus in UC Berkeley, and the environment if contrastly different. If we describe US Davis as modern, lively and fresh, then UC Berkeley is classic, elegant and profound, and even the midday sunlight seems much softer. There are students of different color busily walking around campus and youth groups practicing dancing and musical instruments. The library of UC Berkeley is grand, and the students work hard. Students from around the globe live actively around campus and the visitors can feel the good atmosphere of the world famous university. In the weekend, apart from the university arranged tour to Zephyr Cove and to downtown San Francisco, the students also visit the ancient city of Sacramento, Silicon Valley, Stanford University, Yosemite and so on. On the day back, the four students rent a car to drive on No.1 Highway to see the beautiful view of West Coast.

The 21-day trip give the students a systematic view of US law system, and an in-depth understanding of in-class atmosphere and American culture of world famous universities. This has also broadened their views to give them better foundation for future study and life.
