On the afternoon of 6th April, international famous jurist in Commercial Law, Professor Lawrence E. Mitchell’s Full-time Work Agreement Signing Ceremony held in Law School which marked the internationalization of our university’s discipline of jurisprudence has taken a concrete step forward. It is the second full-time overseas jurist who introduced by our law school that after Professor Mark Poustie, the international famous jurist in Environmental Law, introduced last month. Assistant President Zheng Shaohua, Director of Personnel Office and Talent Office Cheng Lin, Dean of Law School Li Xueyao, Vice Dean Ge Weijun and Hu Ling, Director of Foreign Affairs Office Shang Shu, Liu Xuesu of Personnel Office and so on attended the Signing Ceremony.
Professor Mitchell was the professor of the George Washington University and the Dean of Case Western Reserve University’s Law School. He has been a scholar with international influence in Commercial Law and Financial Law with 17 thesises published on the SSCI (Social Science Citation Index) Law Journals heretofore. Recently, his researches mainly focus on corporate governance and corporate social responsibility, especially the researches on the roles and functions of the board and shareholders which include the research on the activities of hedge funds and sovereign funds. Professor Mitchell pays attention to the studies of American legal education and Chinese laws at the same time. His representative monographs, Corporate Irresponsibility: America’s Newest Export and The Speculation Economy: How Finance Triumphed Over Industry, have been widely received by the academic community.
On the Signing Ceremony, Professor Zheng Shaohua, who thought this will be good not only to improve the research level and internationalization on Commercial Law of our Law School but also to help the research level on interdisciplinary of Commercial Law and Finance, firstly on behalf of SHUFE to welcome Professor Mitchell to join in. He believed Professor Mitchell would be in the good performance of his duties and contribute to SHUFE’s development. Professor Mitchell thanked the kind invitation of SHUFE, indicated that he liked the work environment here very much, he would struggled to do relevant works and wouldn’t live up to the expectations of SHUFE. Then, the Director of Personnel Office Cheng Lin who represented SHUFE and the Dean of Law School Li Xueyao who represented the Law School signed the Employment Contract and Post Employment Agreement with Professor Mitchell respectively.
The joining of Professor Mitchell will form a positive role in promoting SHUFE’s international development. Firstly, it is very rare that Chinese universities employment full-time jurists who also be the professors of tenure in top American colleges of law. Second, from the perspective of discipline construction, it will prominent the financial and economical characteristics of law discipline in our university, and lead our commercial jurisprudence (include Financial Law Research) enter into World Series quickly. Thirdly, from the talent training, Professor Mitchell has deeply researched and practiced on the education of common law, which can prominent the characteristics of international schooling our university, give the faculty of our characteristic “Common Law Certificate Class “a leaping upgrade and can also make the education of all-English Master (LL.M.) and all-English Legal Finance Doctor gain more international recognition. Finally, during the period of Professor Mitchell being the Director of Institute of Law and Economics of Case Western Reserve University and Dean of Law School, he paid more attention to the cooperation with this university’s Business School, which has made him accelerate too much experience to interdisciplines and international university running. Therefore, the joining of Professor Mitchell no doubt has a great significance on SHUFE’s total development especially the promotion of international level and Interdisciplinary collaboration.
